Party First, Party Last, Party Always

This line from Hugh Hewitt gave me pause:

John McCain is, once again, seeking the approval of the Beltway elite at the expense of his party's interests. [emphasis added]

For me at least, it's not a hard choice: country comes before party. So does principle. I like and respect John McCain enough to believe that he had the country and his principles in mind when he proposed an immigration bill with Ted Kennedy. He may be wrong, but who cares if the party suffers when you do what you think is right? Hugh Hewitt, I guess. Of course, his party-first mentality would have given us Justice Harriet Miers. So take his comments as you will.
